This page defines the terms used on Fotoura. It's not fully comprehensive, but hopefully highlights those that need clarifying, particularly in a photographic context. If there is anything you think is missing, please let us know.
Advertising
An event or activity related to commercial photography for an advertising market
Black and White
An event or activity featuring black and white photographs or techniques for the creation thereof
British Isles
An event or activity in which the British Isles are at least a partially featured subject
—e.g. an exhibition of Simon Roberts’ show We English
Business & Marketing
An event or activity that instructs participants in ways to market and sell their work
Camera Handling
An event or activity that teaches participants about various fundamental camera functions, such as aperture, shutter speed, ISO, white balance, etc.
—e.g., an introductory course on how to use and adjust manual settings on your dSLR
Camera- and/or Product-specific
An event or activity that is organised around the use of a particular kind of camera—e.g. dSLR, Holga, Polaroid, compact camera, Canon Rebel, etc.—or is instructive in the use of a particular product type, such as lenses and tripods, or something as specific as Nikon lenses
Career Training & Development
An event or activity that provides training and information for participants pursuing a particular kind of photographic career
—e.g. a photographer’s assistant training course
Collaboration
An event or activity encouraging or involving collaborative work on the part of its participants
Commercial
An event or activity involving work of a commercial nature; namely, work for which a photographer is paid by an external entity
—e.g. a seminar on marketing stock photos, or a course on product photography
Dance
An event or activity relating to the art of dance
Darkroom
An event or activity involving darkroom facilities
—e.g. an introductory darkroom course on developing analogue film and printing from negatives
Digital Photography
An event or activity involving digital cameras or digital images
—e.g., a course on shooting studio portraits with a dSLR, or an iPhone photography competition
Digital Printing
An event or activity in which participants learn to control the appearance of photographs produced with a digital printer by manipulating computer settings, adjusting paper types, etc.
Documentary
An event or activity focusing on photographic work of a documentary nature; namely, work which records various manifestations of life over a period of time (often representing a particular place, event, era, etc. in a more extensive manner than photojournalistic work might)
—e.g., an exhibition of images of Depression-era America, or the Vienna International Photo Awards competition
Editorial
An event or activity having to do with editorial photography, which typically refers to images that are commissioned to supplement or illustrate a pre-existing story or concept within a publication
Exhibition
An event or activity that includes an exhibition component or teaches participants skills related to exhibiting their work
—e.g. a competition in which the winning images will be exhibited, or a workshop on techniques for mounting, framing, hanging and displaying images
Fine Art
An event or activity that features fine art photography, or (less commonly) relates photography to other types of fine art; fine art photography may be loosely defined as photographic work of a purely aesthetic, creative nature, in contrast to work of a more commercial or photojournalistic nature
Flash
An event or activity that incorporates the use of flash as part of the photographic process
—e.g. a course on shooting in low-light and using flash
Food
An event or activity that relates to food—typically related to the field of commercial and/or advertising photography
Group Show
An event or activity that involves participation in a group show
—e.g., an exhibition featuring work from multiple contributors, or a course that concludes with a group show of participants' work
Historical Processes
An event or activity about or involving the use of historical photographic processes, such as wet collodion, daguerrotypes, or camera obscuras
History
An event or activity dealing with historical subject matter (this might be photographic history, political history, etc.)
Hometown
The place where you live or where you grew up.

Interactive
An event or activity that includes an interactive element (this would not apply to workshops or other events which already by definition contain an interactive element)
—e.g., an exhibition that allows you to step into a full-scale camera obscura
Interior
An event or activity dedicated to the practice of photographing interior spaces, generally for commercial purposes
Landscape
An event or activity with a focus on landscape photography and techniques for capturing outdoor scenes
—e.g., an Ansel Adams exhibition or a photographic excursion to Iceland focusing on landscape photography techniques
Long Exposure
An event or activity that incorporates long exposure techniques
—e.g., a night photography workshop that includes instruction in shooting with long exposure times and a tripod, or an exhibition of work created through extended exposures
Macro
An event or activity on the subject of macro, or close-up photography
Memory
An event or activity that involves the subject of memory
—e.g. an exhibition of work about Alzheimer’s patients
Multimedia
An event or activity that incorporates a multimedia element, such as film or music
—e.g., a photo-film category in a competition
Nature
An event or activity involving nature as photographic subject matter or setting
Night & Low Light
An event or activity centred around the subject of photographing in low light conditions
—e.g., a night photography course
Nudes
An event or activity featuring or utilising nude subjects
—e.g., a workshop dedicated to shooting nudes
Photojournalism
An event or an activity focusing on photographic work linked to the field of photojournalism; namely, work serving a reportage function, typically commissioned by a particular news source
—e.g., an exhibition of images by the most recent World Press Photo winners, or a talk about celebrated British photojournalist Don McCullin
Political
Political
An event or activity involving subject matter of a political nature
—e.g., an exhibition of Lie Zhensheng’s images of the Chinese Cultural Revolution
Portrait
An event or activity relating to photographic portraiture, whether spontaneous or staged, taken in a studio or an external setting
—e.g., a workshop in studio portraiture, or an exhibition of the most recent Taylor Wessing Portrait Prize winners
Post-Production
An event or activity that addresses the use of post-production programmes, such as Photoshop or Lightroom
Product
Photographing physical products, usually for commercial sale
Publishing
An event or activity related to the various methods of publishing photographs
—e.g. a seminar on self-publishing photo-books
Social Commentary
An event or activity that deals with issues of socio-political concern
—e.g. an exhibition of work on gang culture in London or a Q&A with Edward Burtynsky about his body of work Oil, which considers the manufacture of oil and its physical effects on our global landscape
Sports Photography
An event or activity relating to sports photography
—e.g., a workshop on photographing horse racing, or an exhibition of portraits of Olympic athletes
Street Photography
Street photography is the art of taking candid, unposed photos of a particular subject or situation.

Underwater Photography

An event or activity with war or other types of violent conflict as the subject matter
—e.g., a talk about Frank Capra’s war photography
Wedding Photography
An event or activity focused on wedding photography, a type of commercial event photography
Wildlife Photography
An event or activity related to wildlife photography, the practice of photographing animals in any range of habitats
Women
An event or activity relating to women in some gender-specific way
—e.g., an exhibition of female photographers, or a women-only workshop
