1o1 Street Photography Workshop
1o1 Street Photography Workshop
Alex Coghe | Advanced, Beginner, Intermediate

Alex’s passion and dedication to Street Photography truly shines throughout his body of work, i therefore decided to take a workshop with him online to help me understand and learn from his methods of working and to get constructive feedback from my work. One thing i wasn’t after was Alex to teach me how to be an artist, this is impossible, i needed to do this on my own, but i felt i needed a little push in the right direction. Naturally dubious about this, as he was Italian and i was English. What about the language barrier? Well, Alex’s English is good, and improved with every lesson. Every topic covered was also in text with images for discussion purposes. A good range of topics covered from the origins of street photography, techniques, the law, marketing and most importantly the aesthetics. Alex is a great teacher, confident, patient, honest and gives harsh critique! At the end of the workshop i came away with great confidence and a much greater understanding of street photography, and i would highly recommend this for anyone new to street photography. Matt Obrey Just finished the last session of Alex Coghe’s street photography workshop via Skype. It’s fantastic, highly recommended for street photography lovers. Gonzalo Rodriguez Matos How our workshops with skype*© Skype is a free program that has been revolutioned audio and video communication. The workshop through presentations allows the student to take advantage of a multimedia course constantly interacting with the instructor. What you needA computer, a broadband connection to the Internet and the free program Skype. That’s all!On skype only one-o-one courses
This is my choice, far less than many workshops including online, to make more effective for the students’ educational effectiveness of the course. Each workshop is differentAll my students receive a highly personalized course, on the basis of the level and needs. For this we give you a form to fill out before the course.SP WS in three languagesCurrently SP WS are in English, Spanish and ItalianMaximum flexibilityMy street photography workshops can start in every moment, in according with the student needness. The time, however, is sensitive to variation and can be arranged with the student according to his/her needs. Keep in mind that I live in Mexico and I must necessarily take into account the time zone (-7 hours from Italy).
The duration of each course is 4 (basic) or 6 (advanced) weeks hence. Also the duration is flexible, because you can decide whether to do so in two weeks or four. When start my workshops? When you want! Yes!!! We are able to start the workshops when you want and trying to accommodate your own schedule.SP WS basic and advanced, with great dedication to all my studentsA course of this type comprises a theoretical part consisting of several topics discussed: history of street photography, aesthetics and motivations of genre, sociology and psychology approach applied in street photography, legal aspects, , marketing strategies.
This is a course dedicated to street photography, so a minimum knowledge of the camera is required .
At the end of the course each student will have a dedicated channel with me, and therefore will remain in contact for each application or questions.
For this there is already a facebook network through which my students can keep in touch with me.More than a simple courseI am creating a network: after the course I don’t disappear. I want to involve my students in my projects. And I am able to offer an international showcase for them through this website.
Our workshops are designed to give you more than what a normal workshop can offer you. After the workshop you will have a dedicated channel with Alex Coghe and the benefits can count on international showcases that we can make available.
Participating in a street photography workshop will give you the important skills. It is clear that we don’t sell “the eye”. The best school for street photography is the street, but we can offer an important base or to present techniques and insights really important to make street photography at the best.Account skype: alessio.coghe

Abstract Photography Course
Abstract Photography Course
Eva Kalpadaki - Fine Art Photographer / Photography Tutor / Independent Researcher | Beginner, Intermediate

This course aims at encouraging you to flirt with your everyday life, with what you see and already know and to challenge yourselves to go beyond that limit, to explore and find out what’s hidden be yond what we normally see and reach the edge of vision through the medium of photography. Using the tool of mindfulness of seeing you will be guided to explore new creative avenues through the foundation principles of abstract photography. Mindfulness is about being present and paying attention to moment to moment on purpose and non-judgementally. We can be and live mindfully in whatever we are doing from breathing to walking, being in an dialogue with other people to engaging to a variety of tasks such as  observing the world around us and taking photographs. By being in the moment and not judging whatever we are doing, we can immerse ourselves in a task as if we are children who see the world for the first time. Mindfulness allows us to push aside the automatic pilot that drives our lives and open our eyes to new experiences. Taking photographs can become a very creative act once you stop thinking about the ‘how to’ and really start looking at the world with your very own eyes by expressing yourselves through your personal way of ‘seeing’. Being mindful and paying attention to unnoticeable things and situations around you can help you improve your photography by exploring different aspects of an object, investing it with visual significance and also inspiring others to look at it from a fresh and new point of view. It will also help you develop your thinking about photography and challenge yourselves with new ideas about it. This experimental course on photography will encourage you to follow a playful approach to all the stages of the creative process of producing an image. It will instigate you to engage in making use of photography in a free, unobstructed manner, liberated from its technical and theoretical restrictions. . . .  VIEW COURSE >>

Bald Eagles of Alaska Photography Holiday
Bald Eagles of Alaska Photography Holiday
NaturesLens | Intermediate

Join NaturesLens for their Bald Eagles of Alaska Photography Holiday which is to be conducted in & around the Chilkat Valley. Every portion of the preserve is used by eagles at some time during the ye ar but from October to February, more than 3000 eagles congregate here to feed on spawning chum salmon. The bald eagles flock to the valley because an upwelling of warm water prevents the Chilkat, Klehini & Tsirku rivers from freezing, thus encouraging the late salmon run. It’s a remarkable sight hundreds of birds sitting in the bare trees lining the river, often six or more birds to a branch. The Alaska Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve was created by the State of Alaska in June of 1982. The preserve was established to protect and perpetuate the world’s largest concentration of Bald Eagles & their critical habitat. It also sustains & protects the natural salmon runs & allows for traditional uses; provided such uses do not adversely affect preserve resources. The Preserve consists of 48,000 acres of river bottom land of the Chilkat, Kleheni, & Tsirku Rivers. The boundaries were designated to include only areas important to eagle habitation. Virtually every portion of the preserve is used by eagles at some time during the year. The natural phenomena responsible for five miles of open water on the Chilkat River during freezing months is called an “alluvial fan reservoir”. The Tsirku fan, which is a fan-shaped accumulation of gravel, rock, sand, & glacial debris, at the confluence of the Tsirku, Kleheni, & Chilkat Rivers acts as a large water reservoir. BALD EAGLES OF ALASKA PHOTOGRAPHY HOLIDAY HIGHLIGHTS 1. 6 days filled with Bald Eagle photography opportunities. 2. Photograph Bald Eagles perched in the trees, diving & fighting for fish or sitting within the landscape. 3. We hope to photograph a wide selection of images; both portraits & closeup shots of perched eagles, eagles calling, flying, diving & fighting for fish; plus wider bird in the landscape images to show the habitat that the birds live within. 4. The timing of the workshop is deliberate so that we can observe the bald eagles who gather for the late salmon run. 5. Bed & breakfast accommodation & transportation within Alaska included. 6. Accommodation is in a comfortable hotel in the Haines area of Alaska 7. Based on Twin shared rooms – single supplement is available. 8. Extension available to photograph Alaskan Mammals for two days at Kroschel Wildlife Centre – price on application. Species will include grizzly bear, wolf, moose, lynx, fox, reindeer, porcupine, snowy owl, wolverine & more. Group numbers are strictly limited to allow everyone to get a great position for the photography of the eagles, general advice will be given before the commencement of each element of the trip. This Bald Eagle photography workshop is suitable for mid-level & experienced photographers. The Bald Eagle is found only on the North American continent. Adult eagles generally weigh between nine and twelve pounds and have a wing span of seven feet. Females are slightly larger than males. NaturesLens guides will, if necessary, take you through camera control, ISO requirements & other settings prior to each element of the Bald Eagles of Alaska trip. . . .  VIEW COURSE >>

Basic Digital Photography Workshop with Geoff Wilkinson
Basic Digital Photography Workshop with Geoff Wilkinson
Geoff Wilkinson | Beginner

Although this is called the “Basic” Workshop it is so much more.  It will take you from holding the camera properly (which hardly anyone does) to knowing what the knobs and buttons are for, h ow to use the white balance creatively, exposure compensation and a lot more.  It all leads to a very simple way of taking pictures without blinding you with science. It is aimed to get you up and running taking pictures on a digital camera. You can use either a DSLR, a bridge camera or some point and shoot ones which are more advanced and have a "P" or programme mode. It is designed to get you taking pictures with the minimum of fuss and without weighing you down with technical camera manuals. We also do simple window lit portraiture using reflectors, a technique which I use myself  a great deal in my magazine work. It is very effective and easy. Landscapes are also covered, this tends to be the most disappointing area for people but there are some easy techniques that I will show you to get you off to a good start. It is all practical with only small groups of never more than five participants, in a friendly environment. Those who have attended this workshop have ranged from complete novices to the more experienced photographers who return to photography for a “refresher”. The age range has been between 18 and 78 with both male and female participants The fee for this workshop is £145.00. Date: 6th April 2014 10am to 4.30pm approx.     . . .  VIEW COURSE >>

Black and White Photography Workshop (1 day)
Black and White Photography Workshop (1 day)
Photoion Photography | Beginner

Black and White Photography Workshop (1 day) Course Description: Ever since the first black and white photograph was produced by Nicéphore in 1826, people have appreciated the style and simplicity t hat accompanies these images. Despite many years of changing tastes and technologies black and white photography has remained incredibly popular, with a great deal of modern photographers still preferring black and white images to colour, and using them to create simple yet amazing photographs. In this new and highly anticipated workshop students will learn the power of black and white photography, as our experienced tutor Ion Paciu demonstrates the way in which this medium allows the photographer to focus solely on the light and the shapes, experimenting with shadows and capturing the interactions between these elements. American photographer Andri Cauldwell once stated: "To see in colour is a delight for the eye but to see in black and white is a delight for the soul" This hands-on workshop will offer students a fun and engaging environment in which to learn as they shoot, exploring with Ion the technical and creative elements of black and white photography. All the while our policy of teaching in small groups ensures that every student gets the individual attention that they need to learn and develop their skills. Course topics: The workshop consists of two parts: Part one is the photography; this will take place outdoors and will give students an understanding of the power of colours in black and white photography. We will also look into subjects and composition to discover what makes a good black and white photograph. For part two the session will move indoors and cover post processing using Photoshop. This is a crucial step in black and white photography as you will learn how to convert your original colour image to black and white What you will need: For this course you will need a Digital SLR or professional Compact camera and a laptop with Photoshop installed. If you do not currently own a camera you are still welcome to attend the course and use one of our spare semi-professional DSLR cameras. Please notify us before the day of your course if you will require the use of our cameras so that we can ensure we have something available for you. Lighting equipment will be provided on the day. What you will take away: Photoion workshops offer an unparalleled opportunity to enhance your photographic skills. The tips, tricks and skills that you pick up in just one session with our professional photographers will stay with you for life. This course will give you the inspiration and the tools required to capture stunning black and white photographs that you can truly be proud of. Following on from this course our tutors are happy to assist with any future questions or problems you may have, with their unparalleled offer of unlimited follow-up email and telephone advice. You can also submit your work to our tutors for constructive feedback and possible inclusion on our site and in our blog. Booking details: Cost: 149 Courses limited to 8 persons. Brighton Street Photography Workshop
Brighton Photographer Heather Buckley | Advanced, Beginner, Expert, Intermediate, Master

You'll start out at Silicon Beach Training where you'll have use of the projector for a primer before setting out on the eclectic streets of Brighton UK. There will be much more practice than lecture, and I'm keeping the group to a maximum of 8 so that I have the time to spend with you all individually during the day. As many of you will be familiar with the basics I will be focusing on creative ideas rather than technical advice to start with, although I'll be available all day for those who need more practical help with their camera. After our day we'll go back to Silicon Beach (only 5 mins from the station, to show and discuss your work) There will be a computer available for everyone should you need it though bringing your own laptop would mean that any work we do on an image will be yours to take away. All your kit will be safely locked away so you don't have to carry it around. Anyway, the price will be £125 for the day. Teas and coffees provided at Silicon Beach but you will need to pay for your own lunch. I'll book a good, reasonably priced place to eat in Brighton. If you are interested please register your interest so I can put you on the list. If you are travelling and need accommodation, I can send you details of a few good options For those who are coming looking forward to meeting you for some creative photography fun. . . .  VIEW COURSE >>

British Owl Photography in Evening Light
NaturesLens | Intermediate

The NaturesLens British Owl Photography workshop will take place during the evening prior to our main Welsh Owls Photography workshop in May. The 2 – 2½ hour British Owl Photography in Evening Ligh t workshop will begin with us photographing this striking & charismatic owl on old farm posts & gates. For the next part of the workshop, we will relocate to some nearby woodland & photograph our subject in it’s natural habitat, including hopefully the elusive peeking round the tree shot. The third location will be amongst some gorse which always makes for a great contrast. Our final location will be in a different area of woodland & upon completion at this point the Long Eared Owl will be fed, allowing for some great shots of the bird feeding, but you have to be quick! This NaturesLens British Owl Photography Workshop will start reasonably late in the afternoon, with the aim of shooting in pleasant early evening light as opposed to the harsher light of the afternoon. Please note: should the bird not be available, we will substitute in a barn owl & make use of farm buildings & abandoned machinery instead of the woodland locations. . . .  VIEW COURSE >>

Colorado and Utah tour with Joe Cornish and Antony Spencer
Colorado and Utah tour with Joe Cornish and Antony Spencer
Light and Land Photography | Advanced, Beginner, Expert, Intermediate, Master

The Rocky Mountains are among the most spectacular mountain ranges on the planet. In the state of Colorado these mountains are rivalled only by the Canadian Rockies in terms of beauty and sheer size. We begin our tour here, exploring lakes, rivers and summits surrounded by one of the great colour displays in nature, aspen trees in the fall. This epic landscape is transformed as mountains glow under the changing foliage at different altitudes. The summits may well be dusted with the first snows, foretelling winter. It is no surprise that this is playground of many of the worlds greatest landscape photographers. We begin our tour by exploring the Aspen region; fall colours can be fascinating here. This beautiful mountain town is ideally situated for some of the most iconic landscapes in the Colorado’s Rocky Mountains with Maroon Bells and Crystal Mill amongst others. Next we move down to Telluride, a stunning small ski resort town high in the mountains. Here we are surrounded by some of the most beautiful mountains in the entire Rocky Mountain Range. It will be the height of autumn and so they should be at their most colourful. Many of the highest roads in the continental United States are near Telluride, providing easy access to sensational views with lakes and rivers and golden groves of shimmering aspen. Our final destination is the town of Moab in Utah, once the home of American uranium mining, now a thriving arts and cultural community. Moab is also famous for its incomparable ‘slick rock’ cycle trail, but we are there because it is gateway to two of America’s most amazing National parks, Arches and Canyonlands. Although distant mountain ranges frame the scenery, this is essentially high plateau country, and through it flows the Colorado and Green rivers. But the rivers apart it is a dry land, technically semi-arid, and this harsh climate has encouraged the formation of some of the world’s most spectacular exposed rock features. The country rock of the Colorado plateau is predominantly red, orange, and yellow, although white, green, violet and even blue tints can be found here too. From Moab both national parks are within easy reach. Canyonlands NP is in three zones, and we will visit the aptly named ‘Island in the sky’ section, with its views and lookouts over canyons and gorges on an incredible scale. Nearby is the equally spectacular overlook of Dead Horse Point State Park. Mesa Arch is a standout location with first light illuminating the inside of the arch and a truly epic view into the landscape beyond. Arches National Park contains many of the world’s natural rock arches, all of which look magnificent throughout the day.  Delicate Arch and Landscape Arch are amongst the most recognizable landscape locations in the world, but Arches provides dozens of extraordinary sights to explore, rock towers and turrets and micro canyons, in addition to its iconic arches. And the skyline of the park is of distant mountains and mesas, making Arches a photographer’s dream. Places are limited due to 4x4 vehicles to get us into locations off the beaten track in this vast wilderness. Please book early to avoid disappointment . . .  VIEW COURSE >>

Photography Made Simple | Beginner, Intermediate

Our Creative Photography Courses have been designed to open your eyes to the creative possibilities of your camera, by taking some of the basic photography rules and gently bending them!  We encourag e you to shoot with an agenda, which clarifies what you are trying to achieve with your picture.  We promise (and we’ve been right so far) that you will take a picture on our creative course that you are proud to hang on your wall. Working on both single-subject and vista pictures, we manipulate shutter speed, lens aperture and camera ISO to achieve the results you previously visualised. We also have a couple of camera tricks you may not have thought of. It’s easy to get a bit stale and repetitive with your photography after a few years, and this course is designed to give your pictures the creative spark they might be lacking.  Even quite experienced photographers have found this course useful, as it makes you consider your pictures in a different way. If you are not familiar with your camera, you may find our DSLR Photography Course more useful. This course assumes less prior knowledge than the landscape or portrait photography courses. The courses take place at a number of picturesque locations across the UK. See the list below for current available courses. . . .  VIEW COURSE >>

Digital Image Editing and Workflow (with Adobe Lightroom 4)
Digital Image Editing and Workflow (with Adobe Lightroom 4)
Stills | Beginner

Adobe Lightroom helps solve two of the main problems that afflict digital photographers: how to organize all of the files, and how to edit them without spending all of your spare time at a computer sc reen.  Lightroom is a convenient and flexible programme that helps you to organise and sift your photographs into collections, and also gives access to a powerful set of tools that edit, enhance and export your pictures. You can use intuitive pre-set tools, you can create your own favourite adjustments, you can edit large numbers of images with one click of a mouse, and you can fine-tune your image-editing by selectively working on parts of a picture. And you can experiment, secure in the knowledge that you are working in a non-destructive environment, and that your pictures are safe. This practical four-week course will introduce you to the principles of file organisation and image-editing, giving you the knowledge and confidence to choose when to work with this convenient and flexible programme, and whether or not you need the full power of Photoshop Creative Suite. Sample picture files will be provided for you to work with, or you can bring a selection of your own. If you work in RAW, please also bring JPEGs on a memory stick, external hard drive or cloud storage such as Dropbox.  Week 1:  You will get to know the Lightroom layout and workspace, importing a set of files into the catalogue and starting to organise the files into collections, and adding useful file information. You will explore the opportunities for viewing and aids for analysing the pictures. You will start to use the convenient quick develop editing tools. Week 2:  We will explore the digital image-editing workflow. The usual flow is to correct and optimise before we enhance, interpret or exaggerate. The basic areas to consider are cropping, cloning, colour and tone. Taking each in turn, we will correct and clean up the pictures in a measurable and controllable way. We will investigate techniques to control digital noise, colour distortions and lens corrections. We will work on individual files and also start applying corrections to batches. We will create and apply pre-set corrections. Week 3: Having corrected and optimised the picture files, we can start interpreting, enhancing and exaggerating – the fun part of image-editing. We can try colour to black-and-white conversions, using the many pre-sets to guide; we can selectively boost or restrain colours; we can add grain and textures, vignettes and split tones; we can mix and match these effects and create and save our own favourite effects. We can apply adjustment effects to selected picture areas.  Week 4: Image editing is all good fun, but how do we know where to start? Or when to stop? We’ll have a look at some photographic styles and techniques from photography’s rich history to give us some ideas and then try to replicate them. We will discuss ways of using the programme and the technology to develop photographic projects. And we will look at how Lightroom can help us to export those projects as books, prints and slideshows.  . . .  VIEW COURSE >>

Great Grey Owl Photography in Evening Light
NaturesLens | Intermediate

Join NaturesLens in Mid-Wales for this workshop which will focus on an extended session with a beautiful Great Grey Owl, an owl which is always a favourite subject on our owl workshops. The emphasis w ill be on pushing the boundaries of what is possible with this stunning bird. The 2 – 2½ hour workshop will begin with us photographing this striking owl on some perches & old posts. For the next part of the workshop, we will relocate to some nearby woodland & photograph our subject in it’s natural habitat, including hopefully the elusive peeking round the tree shot. Staying on or on the edges of the woodland, we will try for some flight shots. These can be challenging but generally work brilliantly, affording attendees some amazing shots which show off the wing span of the bird. At this point the Great Grey Owl will be fed, allowing for some great shots of the bird feeding, but you have to be quick! This NaturesLens Great Grey Owl Photography Workshop will start reasonably late in the afternoon, with the aim of shooting in pleasant early evening light as opposed to the harsher light of the afternoon. Please note: should the bird not be available, we will substitute in either a barn owl or a little owl & make use of farm buildings & abandoned machinery instead of the woodland locations. . . .  VIEW COURSE >>

This half-day seminar is classroom based and will go through how to shoot a wedding from start to finish. We will look at all the pre-planning you need to do to try to ensure a successful day together with what can go wrong and how to deal with it. The seminar is being held at Moulton College in Northamptonshire commencing at 10am and finishing around 1pm depending on questions. Refreshments will be provided during the seminar but lunch is not included. No prior wedding photography experience is required as this is intended for those new to the genre but a reasonable level of photography knowledge will be expected as we will not be teaching how to use a camera. Whilst we will talk about how professional wedding photographers handle particular situations so that you may learn from their experience we are not covering the business side of wedding photography during this seminar. If you would like one-to-one coaching on those aspects please contact us separately. . . .  VIEW COURSE >>

The theatre of life exists all around, in every town and city all over the world. It is easily accessible to everyone but can be amongst the most challenging areas of photography where you just don't know how the person being photographed will react. It is this fear of the 'unknown' that prevents many people from ever exploring life around them with a camera. But becoming a Street Photographer can be hugely rewarding in so many ways. It can help you grow as an individual with a new found confidence, something that you can use in all areas of your life. It can help you to grow as a photographer, an artist, a creative by developing your technical and aesthetic skills to produce visually stimulating and compelling images. But most satisfying of all is capturing a fleeting moment, when elements combine to produce what Henri Cartier-Bresson called, 'the decisive moment.' Japanese Winter Wildlife Tour
Japanese Winter Wildlife Tour
NaturesLens | Intermediate

Imagine travelling through a winter landscape in a country heavy with tradition, where you can encounter & photograph entrancing snow monkeys, beautiful dancing red-crowned cranes, dreamlike swans on a snow covered frozen lake plus both Steller’s & White Tailed Sea Eagles on drifting pack ice, this is exactly what the NaturesLens Japanese Winter Wildlife Touroffers. Our trip also accommodates chance encounters with Ural Owls, Red Foxes & more native wildlife. Commencing in Tokyo & meeting at Narita Airport, the NaturesLens Japanese Winter Wildlife Tour first travels to the Jigokudani Valley, to photograph the monkeys of “Hell’s Valley”, where steam & boiling water bubbles from small crevices in the frozen ground, surrounded by steep cliffs & formidably cold & hostile forests. Whilst we stay in the town of Yudanaka, our target is to photograph the Japanese Macaques (Macaca fuscata), more commonly referred to as Snow Monkeys, that descend from the steep cliffs & forest to sit in the warm waters of the onsen or hot springs. The monkeys return to the security of the forests in the evenings. We will spend two full days in the valley. You will have the opportunity to photograph the monkeys in the onsen, or at play in the valley below the main area where intimate mother & baby shots are easily achieved. It is without a doubt a harsh environment in the winter months with snow on the ground for a third of the year, but the hot springs make it a paradise for the several of hundred monkeys that live in the valley & the surrounding forests. Whilst at the onsen or the valley, the monkeys simply ignore the photographers & simply get on with whatever it is they want to be doing. From Yudanaka, our Japanese winter wildlife tour returns briefly to Tokyo, then travels onwards to the island of Hokkaido. Our first main location is Akan National Park which is located in eastern Hokkaido. We stay in Akan for at least two full days of photography of the Red-crowned Cranes. Males & females are virtually indistinguishable, although males tend to be slightly larger in size. Red-crowned cranes form flocks in winter but otherwise live in pairs. Once mated the pair will stay together for life. The crane has one of the most beautiful dances in the bird world; these dances help to strengthen the bond between the mated pair. We will visit a number of crane sites at varying times of the day from sunrise through to sunset, with the intention of watching & photographing the cranes perform their intricate courtship dances; the birds bow to one another, then throw their heads over their backs, then bow again. The pair leaps into the air, at the same time raising their wings. The Red-crowned Cranes’ unison dance is a ritual the pair will perform together many times over the years, to strengthen their lifelong bond. Lake Kussharo is a caldera lake in Akan National Park, eastern Hokkaidō, Japan. As with many geographic names in Hokkaidō, the name derives from the Ainu language. It is the largest caldera lake in Japan in terms of surface area, & sixth largest lake in Japan. It is also the largest lake in Japan to freeze over completely in winter. The lake’s central island, Nakajima, is a composite volcano. Volcanic gases render the lake water acidic, & it supports few fish except in areas where inflowing streams dilute the water. The lake is on the migratory path of the whooper swan.  We spend two days at the various swan locations, undertaking photography of these beautiful birds at the various calderas around which they gather. In addition some amazing opportunities are presented for in flight, taking off & resting on ice shots, all within a dreamlike landscape. The area is rich with other wildlife, much of which we will spend time at leisure attempting to locate & photograph – this includes red squirrels, red fox & a particular favourite in the form of the roosting Ural Owls. From Lake Kussharo, the Japanese winter wildlife tour moves onto Rausu, a small coastal fishing town, with a small population of approximately 6,500. Located on the Shiretoko Peninsula, it is the most northeasterly town in Japan. During the winter months the population of Steller’s Sea Eagles & White-tailed Sea Eagles hunt for fish on the pack ice, which drifts down from the Sea of Okhotsk in Russia. We will stay in Rausu for several nights, during which we will take advantage of the tour boats that operate from Rausu harbour. These boats are without a doubt the best manner in which to see these stunning birds. The Steller’s Sea Eagle is the heaviest eagle in the world. It breeds in northeastern Russia & winters further south, reaching Hokkaido where it spends its days hunting for fish around the pack ice. Packs or clusters of these immense birds gather in Rausu harbour & out on the pack ice waiting for the fish that the tour boats provide. The White-tailed Sea Eagle is another large eagle, closely related to the North American Bald Eagle. It is more widespread than Steller’s & breeds across northern Europe & Asia, & is a year round resident of Hokkaido.  The NaturesLens Japanese Winter Wildlife Tour includes three days of photographing the impressive sea eagles, with a 5am & 9am cruises each day. The afternoon of each day is free for rest or photo advice & critique; however, one evening at least will be devoted to photographing the Blakiston’s Fish Owl from a local hide. The Blakiston’s Fish Owl is the largest living species of owl, it is in fact a large eagle owl, with a wingspan that can reach up to two metres long. Blakiston’s fish owl is found in Siberia, northeast China & the island of Hokkaido in Japan which is why the photographic opportunity afforded here is to be grasped, that said, the evening photography is harsh & adequate preparation is required. Additionally on the tour, we will include visits to a sea eagle feeding site on a frozen lake, this provides some amazing opportunities for shots of interaction between the sea eagles of both types, plus black-eared kites. The photographic opportunities afforded for bird in flights shots are equally excellent. Upon leaving Hokkaido, our tour will return to Narita airport, have a brief overnight stop in a local hotel near to the airport & from there depart homeward bound. . . .  VIEW COURSE >>

Landscape Photography
Stills | Beginner, Intermediate

Two days of practical landscape photograph techniques suitable for beginners to intermediate photographers. The weekend will consist of a series of short photographic challenges to work on specific te chnical or compositional techniques. Each technique will be introduced with a short technical instruction, photographic 'flash cards' handed out, then half an hour of shooting (with tutor support, guidance and encouragement), a review of the results, then on to the next challenge. It isn't a race, or a competition, more a series of stimulating exercises to focus on some of the most useful techniques and tools for landscape photography. Many techniques are common to all genres of photography, but landscape photographers are often forced to react and respond to the rapidly changing light and conditions. The activities will take place as part of short journeys on foot, and we will be outside for most of the day. Day 1: We will discuss some basic techniques and ideas at the Stills' base before heading out to shoot for the morning. We will spend the morning close to base, perhaps visiting Greyfriars' Kirkyard and the Meadows. After lunch we can explore the dramatic possibilities of Salisbury Crags and Arthur's Seat as the sun goes down. We will then go back to base to have a short session to plan the next-day's shoot - a big part of successful landscape photography is: planning, predicting and pre-visualising. Day 2: Weather permitting, we can go further afield and aim to be out for most of the day, developing the skills through more short challenges. Potential locations could be the Pentland Hills, or a coast and woodland location. Specific locations and activities will depend on the prevailing conditions. . . .  VIEW COURSE >>

Paris at Dawn
Cities at Dawn | Beginner, Intermediate

An amazing photo adventure, wandering through the early morning streets of Paris at dawn Photographer Anthony Epes will lead this intensive workshop held over four days where you’ll learn professio nal photo techniques on the move as your wander through the beautiful early morning streets of Paris, learning how to take unique photos of those iconic Parisian views. Our workshops are inspired by Anthony’s books London at Dawn and Paris at Dawn. "Photographing cities at dawn is a photographers paradise. The light is incredible and the city is virtually empty. There are plentiful opportunities to create stunning images and I am always amazed at how few people take advantage of this time. In my workshops I teach how to photograph the dawn light – from the ‘blue hour’ when the sky turns from black, to deep blue and then starts to break open with sunlight. We will photograph the iconic views of each city as well as discovering hidden spots and interesting characters." Anthony Dawn in Paris is a time of quiet, calm beauty, when the usually bustling streets are virtually silent and you have the city to yourself. You’ll wander through the alleyways, cross the big boulevards, pause on the bridges over the Seine and see the epic Parisian vistas as dawn breaks and the sun rises up over the city. Dawn is hugely atmospheric, creating a sense of wonder and rejuvenation unlike any other time of day. On this workshop you will learn how to create stunning images at this unique time. Anthony has spent several months in Paris photographing the city in the dawn hours for his upcoming book Paris at Dawn . He has tirelessly searched the streets for new, interesting views, discovered fascinating unfamiliar sites and worked hard to find a vision of the city that captures its spirit but offers something new and fresh. Anthony would like to share his Paris at Dawn adventure with 6 beginner and intermediate photographers. Find out what past participants said about our workshops. Poland's White Tailed Sea Eagle Winter Photography #1
Poland's White Tailed Sea Eagle Winter Photography #1
NaturesLens | Intermediate

Visualise yourself visiting a hide in central Poland, where large numbers of white tailed eagles gathering in front of the photography hides & the photographic opportunities are both abundant & presen ted in front of you, that is the nature of this NaturesLens White Tailed Sea Eagle Winter Photography Workshop & is surely one of the highlights of the natural world. Following an afternoon arrival at Warsaw airport, the group will be met by our hosts for the coming four days of eagle photography. The timetable is one of an early rise, so that the group can be moved to & settle into the hide(s) under the cover of darkness. The hide owners have devoted many years of hard work to ensure that the eagles visit the location & regularly feed, therefore it is absolutely vital that the eagles do not make any association between the food placed for them, and human beings. We would stress that from this point onwards, nobody is allowed to leave the hide under any circumstances until after dark for the reason noted above. It is anticipated that in total the group will spend approx 11-12 hours each day in the hide.

Our driver & guide will get us settled into the hide, light the gas heater for us, & will then leave to allow us to prepare for the day ahead. We would stress that from this point onwards, nobody is allowed to leave the hide under any circumstances until after dark for the reason noted above. Workshops begin in April when the puffins, guillemots and razorbills are busy building nests and courting and the beach in North Haven is crammed full of Atlantic grey seals. An unmissable landscape p anorama unfolds in May when the island is covered with a carpet of bluebells and red campion. The end of May to mid-July is the time to capture the iconic shot of a comical puffin with an impossible number of sandeels crammed in its beak. The last couple of weeks of July may afford the opportunity to see a puffling exercising its wings at the entrance to the burrow. There is still plenty to photograph in August with herring and lesser black-backed gulls often posing on rocky outcrops. We tend to explore the whole island at this time of the year giving an opportunity to capture the great landscapes around the coast. The year culminates in the seal pupping season from late August through to the end of October. Workshop participants have pre-booked, guaranteed places on the 10am island crossing of the day on the Dale Princess and we return on the last boat of the day giving us as much time as possible on the island. We have privileged use of the library in the Warden’s House to review images on a computer if we need to shelter from a shower. . . .  VIEW COURSE >>

The NaturesLens Residential Puffin Nature Photography Workshop encompasses seas filled with rafts of puffins, razorbills & guillemots coupled with looming offshore rocks contrasting with exposed headl ands or sheltered inlets, which are home to the seal population and many other mammals. Skomer Island is located approximately 3 miles from Martin’s Haven on the beautiful Pembrokeshire coast. The island, which is the location for our Puffin Photo Workshop is reached by boat, with a journey time of approximately 15 minutes in duration. Skomer Island itself is 750-acres of beautiful habitat for a variety of amazing wildlife experiences. The very reason for the NaturesLens Puffin Photo Workshop including an overnight element is to include the ability to photograph the manx shearwaters in or approaching their burrows. Obviously, staying overnight also guarantees the ability on this nature photography workshop to photograph birds at sunset or at sunrise. Additionally the island is home to a large population of wild rabbits that scamper freely amongst the acres of wildflowers. . . .  VIEW COURSE >>
