Introduction to Black & White Photography

Week 1: Capture, technical notes, discussions, art context. Understand the fundamentals of light and time in balancing an accurate exposure; no longer b . . .e a slave to the Auto setting! Know how to utilise the Manual functions of your 35mm SLR camera; understand film types, film speed, depth of field, different lenses and how to use them creatively; appreciate photography within an art context- begin to look at the work of other photographers. A project and one roll of B&W film will be given to participants as an assignment for the second week.Week 2: Film Processing: Learn how to process a B&W film by hand in Stills’ darkrooms. We will discuss different film types and chemistry, as well as best practice procedures for film handling. Appreciate photography within an art context- look at the work of photographer Nan Goldin.Week 3: Contact Printing: Gain an appreciation of general darkroom procedures; experiment with photograms, earn contact printing and printing from negatives. (All paper and chemistry will be provided.)Week 4: Darkroom Printing: This last session will allow participants to keep on printing with some one to one attention. We will also explore some basic dodging and burning and other printing techniques to get the most from your negatives.
How to Shoot Weddings
ENDS (25/05/13) VIEW COURSE
This half-day seminar is classroom based and will go through how to shoot a wedding from start to finish. We will look at all the pre-planning you need to . . . do to try to ensure a successful day together with what can go wrong and how to deal with it. The seminar is being held at Moulton College in Northamptonshire commencing at 10am and finishing around 1pm depending on questions. Refreshments will be provided during the seminar but lunch is not included. No prior wedding photography experience is required as this is intended for those new to the genre but a reasonable level of photography knowledge will be expected as we will not be teaching how to use a camera. Whilst we will talk about how professional wedding photographers handle particular situations so that you may learn from their experience we are not covering the business side of wedding photography during this seminar. If you would like one-to-one coaching on those aspects please contact us separately.

Our base for the week is a converted f . . .armhouse with wonderful views and excellent facilities including a fantastic pool with hot thermal spring.We will build on our photographic skills by practising a variety of landscape, street photography, portrait work and night photography through a combination of group sessions and visits to places of interest. Excursions will include an afternoon and evening in Siena, a visit to the celebrated gardens of La Foce with some of the best views in Tuscany and a trip to the medieval town of Pienza.
